Before he became Pope Leo XIV, Robert Francis Prevost was a young man with a gift for mathematics and a longing to serve. That longing led him to the Order of Saint Augustine, where his vocation was shaped not only by studies, but by a lifelong Augustinian formation grounded in community, ministry, and a restless search for God.

From his early days in discernment to his years as a missionary in Peru, through leadership in the Order and now the papacy, Pope Leo XIV embodies what it means to be an Augustinian friar: a companion on the journey, a servant of unity, and a man rooted in love for the Church.

Fr. Jeremy Hiers, O.S.A., Vocation Director for the Province of St. Thomas of Villanova of the Augustinian Order, reflected on the moment.

“What a blessing to see a son of Augustine become Pope Leo XIV,” Fr. Jeremy shared. “I have no doubt the Spirit will now use the heart and words of Pope Leo XIV to inspire others to learn more about the Augustinian way of life.”

For Fr. Jeremy, the moment stirred personal memories of his own call.

“I was just beginning to discern my call to religious life when Pope Francis spoke his first words as pope in 2013,” he wrote. “That message resonated deeply with my heart… That is before I discovered the Augustinians!”

In the 24 hours following the announcement of Pope Leo XIV, several young men had already reached out to Fr. Jeremy to learn more about the Augustinians. The Spirit is already at work.

Fr. Jack Tierney, O.S.A., Assistant Vocation Director of the Province of Our Mother of Good Counsel of the Augustinian Order, shared in the excitement.

“If you're discerning a vocation and you're waiting for a sign: our first American Pope might be it,” said Fr. Jeremy. “Please be open to God's call: to married life, to single life, to religious life as a sister, priest, or brother. The Holy Spirit is calling you also!”
